It's great finding this site and I appreciate your work in putting this together.
I often think about my decade in Newton and all the wonderful memories of former students and others.
I very much would like to get re-connected with those who blog on this site.
For a quick re-cap since I left Newton in the fall of 1979, I became HS Band Director at Pascagoula and then moved to Crystal Springs as Music Supervisor for the Copiah County Schools.

I remarried (Patricia Beemon) in 1991 and we moved to our current location in Wimberley TX. We both continued to teach band. I retired in '01 and Pat retired 2 years later. Since then, we have spent much of our time traveling around the US, Europe, Canada, and Asia.
I am writing this info from Sacramento where we are caring for an ill family member. Hopefully, we will be back in Texas soon and would love to get in touch with former friends from Newton

For the past 4 years I’ve been living in Queen Creek, AZ (near Phoenix). Married to Margaret 18 years with 2 beautiful girls, Tori (14) and Jessi (8).
I’m a project manager with Cerner Corporation, working mostly CA and AZ the past few years.
I make it back to Newton a couple of times each year to visit my parents, brother, and sister-in-law …fortunately they also manage a couple of trips to Arizona each year as well.

It’s nice to see some familiar names on this site and bring back some great memories.

Another one of the Burtons from Newton, I graduated in 1962 at the age of 16. I attended ECJC and then Mississippi College. I got drafted in September, 1966, one month after getting married, and was in Vietnam from March, 1967 to March, 1968.

"What a Long Strange Trip It's Been" doesn't adequately describe my journey, but it comes closer than any other song, to make the story short. If anyone is interested in more details, email me at burton@ptsi.net, I am now in Guymon, Oklahoma. I am a licensed family therapist in private practice.

I’m Lisa Willis Lockett, class of 1986. I married John Lockett, class of 1988, in 1991 after graduating from USM with a BSBA. John has been in the U.S. Air Force since 1991, so we began our married life in Spangdahlem, Germany. We have had some amazing experiences thanks to John’s service in the military. We are currently stationed at Hickam AFB, Oahu. John is a Major, Chief of Airspace and Air Traffic Integration.

Through the years, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to be home with our daughters, Eden-15 and Jessica-12, as they’ve grown (my favorite occupation). Time does fly! We are thoroughly enjoying our years of travel, but we also long for roots as we experienced in our youth. We will likely settle someplace in the southeast within the next several years, because we know for sure, there’s NO PLACE LIKE THE SOUTH!

After leaving NHS I attended East Central and The University of Alabama. After leaving Alabama I moved to Denver Colorado for approx. 1 year where I worked a little and skied a lot. I then moved to Ridgeland and starting working for SkyTel Communications in 1990. I married my wife Tammy, who is from Byram, in 1994 and we had our daughter Kady in 1997. I left SkyTel in 2007 as Director of Customer Care and pursued purchasing an existing small business. After several months of negotiations that didn’t come to fruition so I took a Director position with Comcast Cable in Pearl where I’m currently employed.

I still love sports but time has taken a toll on the mobility so I reserve my efforts to bass fishing, taking kids water skiing and tubing along with alligator hunting once a year.

Our home is between Brandon and the Reservoir where we’ve lived since getting married. Our daughter Kady attends school in the Northwest Rankin system.

Hello everyone!!!  This Tiger Roar site is great!!  As
for me, well I have been married for 25 yrs. now to
the love of my life and have 2 grown sons.  No
grandbabies yet but hopefully one day.  I live in Decatur, MS
and work as a forklift driver for the press dept. @
Unipres in Forest, MS.  It is a Japaneese Co. and we
build automobile parts for Nissan.  Although I really
enjoy driving a forklift, I decided that since the
children are grown and gone that I wanted to go back to
school.  I am enrolled @ ECCC and am studying electricity.
Who knew there was so much to learn about
electricity and wiring houses and what not...  It's all good
though!!  My husband John works for the Golden Moon
Casino as a slot technician.  I can tell he really enjoys
his work there.  Life is good at the Frith house and we
look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.

Barbara left NHS around 1984 to move back to her hometown of Hattiesburg. She continued her teaching career there. She married a former classmate, Ricky, and they have two children. Being from a close knit family, she enjoyed very much being back in the area where most of her 6 siblings and her parents made their homes.

In November of 1994, she underwent surgery at the University of Alabama to repair a microstenosis valve to her heart. There were complications during her surgery (which led to further surgeries and procedures) and she did not wake up until January. This amazed all of her doctors, especially since she was very alert as well. Unfortunately, there were further complications and Barbara died February 25, 1995 at the age of 42. At the time, her daughter, Ana, was 7 years old and her son, Richard, was 4. Barbara adored her children, and as she did with many of us, worked hard to teach them something every day. ---Submitted by Julie Goodwin Rowzee.

Jewelry shop owner David "Kip" Logan, 49, died 8/29/2005 during hurricane Katrina.

LAUREL, Miss. — Tuesday will be a difficult day for Deborah Logan and her two grown children. Ryan, 25, and Laura Ashley, 20.

It was a year ago, on Aug. 29, 2005, when Deborah Logan lost her husband, Kip, during Hurricane Katrina. The tree Kip Logan had worried about during the high winds and heavy rain crashed on the couple’s front porch, killing him and breaking her neck. It took Ryan Logan hours later, after cutting his way south with chain saws, telling his mom that her husband was dead before Deborah Logan could admit it to herself.

“I think I’ll drive up to Jackson Tuesday to spend time with Ryan,” said Deborah Logan. “I’m going to hang a black wreath on the door of the store with a note remembering Kip.”

Deborah Logan said the way she handles not having her soulmate of 25 years next to her has developed so she can survive.“I have my children and they are my reason for living,” said Logan at her home in Windermere. “I tried once to just stay home and grieve but that didn’t solve anything. I didn’t see any sense in doing that."

Logan now operates Kip’s Jewelers in Laurel. Her husband, whom she described as the outgoing sort of man everyone enjoyed being around, is no longer there. But Logan feels closest to her husband when she is inside the store.

“Everyone loved his honesty and integrity,” she said. “He used to say you can look into anyone’s eyes and see the truth. That is why he always was straight with people. That is why people trusted him.”

Deborah Logan can still see him in the store, throwing a football, of all things, to friends and workers.

“I have no idea where that came from, but he’d just start throwing a football in the store with all these glass displays and our life savings in jewelry all over the place,” Deborah Logan said smiling. “By keeping the store open, it somehow keeps the memory of Kip alive in my mind. It’s very hard to explain.”

Harder still is when an out-of-town customer, who hasn’t heard of the loss, comes into the store looking for Kip Logan. Deborah Logan must relive that horrible day on 12th Street in Laurel.

She can still hear the sound of the pine tree as it suddenly cracked and started falling toward the house. She can hear Kip yelling for her to run down the front porch away from the tree. She can feel his arm shoot out across her body, throwing her against the outside wall of the house, trying to get her out of harm’s way as the tree comes down on him. She remembers the peaceful expression on his face.

“I can remember being mad earlier at the storm because I had too much work to do and I couldn’t work with this storm raging,” Logan said. “What I didn’t realize at that time was the most important thing I had wasn’t the car in the driveway I thought was going to get damaged, but Kip, who was sitting in a chair watching the storm.”

Logan asked herself all the questions. Why did he have to die? What meaning does it have? How much more can she take?

“I couldn’t find the answers, so I just focus on the things I can control,” said Logan. “I watch after my children. I work at the store doing the best I can. I live my life.”

And she does something she hopes others will do as well, especially on Tuesday.

“I remember Kip,” she said quietly.

Hamp graduated from Mississippi College in 1978 with B.S. in Education. Hamp was in business for sixteen years and served as the Mayor of Newton for thirteen years.

“I thoroughly enjoyed being mayor of Newton. But public officials have the weight of decisions on their shoulders. Part of me misses that but on the other side of the coin, there’s not much pressure here and that’s refreshing.” After losing the election, Beatty said he didn’t know what he was going to do. “I had to let the smoke clear a little bit,” Beatty said. “But after I started looking at my options that I might have available, we started looking at Starkville. I explored my options of going to work for Mississippi State and if there were any jobs open that I would qualify for.” Beatty then found an opening in the college’s Small Business Development department. He interviewed for the job and got an offer. Now Beatty is fully entrenched into life in Starkville and MSU. At his new job, Beatty works with new businesses helping them develop business plans before getting started. “We work with people who are trying to start a business and need help with the steps and process of doing that,” Beatty said. “Usually, small businesses are up and running and need some help with some aspect of their business. We help them with market studies, business plans and things like that.”

As a Mississippi State graduate, Beatty is back at one of the places he loves. He has season tickets to football and basketball where he can watch his daughter Lauren cheer for the Bulldogs while working on her biological engineering degree, where she still has a 4.0 average.

While Beatty has enjoyed his time in Starkville, he comes to Newton most every Friday to check on his buildings at Northside Plaza and to eat tamales at Mexico Lindo. “It really was an honor serving the people of Newton,” Beatty said. “We miss Newton and miss the people that we have known for years and grew up with. We’ll always cherish those friendships and memories. But it was a perfect time for us to make this move. --Excerpt from The Newton Record

I'm married to Glenn (25 years in May). We have 4 kids, although it's hard to call them kids anymore. Jessica is a Junior at Southern majoring in music ed. with emphasis in french horn and theory. Michael is a freshman now at MCC. He played football at EMCC this past fall and wants to play at Miss State. He is a bulldog all the way! Aubrey is a sophomore playing football and tennis, and Emily is an 8th grader playing both slow and fast pitch softball and basketball at West Lauderdale. I teach 7th grade math and pre algebra at WL, and I still play the flute most every Sunday in church and occasionally for weddings.

I went through Newton just last Sunday. Things sure seem different there on Newton Ave. It seems so much smaller now. It's amazing how time changes your perspective on things.

My dad, Ray A. McCullough, former NHS history teacher died back in 1992 after a battle with congestive heart failure.

Jamey (22) is graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in Economics on May 11 (2007)! He has landed a job in Dallas with a foreign exchange business and will be moving in June. Logan (18) has almost completed his freshman year at Texas A&M and still deciding on a major at this point. became bored and went back into sales this time with my husband's company. Rarely do we get a moment to breath
these days with all of the activities the children are involved in but
we don't mind. We are big Atlanta Braves fans and when we have a break we enjoy going to Gulf Shores, AL.

I’ve worked as a Teaching Assistant at Clinton Park Elementary since March 2002. Prior to working at Clinton Park, I worked at La-Z-Boy South in Newton for 5 years until we moved to Jackson, MS for David’s career. In 1986 I went to work for NCR Corporation and hoped to retire fully vested with them. AT&T bought out NCR and eventually closed our office in 1994. In 1994 I went to work for Newsprint South, Inc. Bowater bought Newsprint South, Inc. in 2000. I stayed home and drew my severance and took care of my mom who had Knee replacement surgery and my dad who had prostate cancer (Died Sept. 5, 2002). Having never been home with my children other than summer vacations and Christmas holidays I decided that I liked being home but not full time. I went to work at the school so that I could have the same vacations and holidays as them. I’ve found this to be rewarding and challenging work!! I‘ve had many children that touched my heart and some that were quite a challenge but I’m glad I’ve had this opportunity. I plan to return to the office environment in the future as I’ll soon have a child in College. The boys keep us busy with Soccer, Band and Church activities. We are very proud of them!

Regina Gail Gibbs Rigby (1958 - 2006)

Regina Gail Gibbs Rigby, 48, a beloved Forest school teacher, died Friday, Nov. 10 at her home with her family lovingly surrounding her. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 at Forest United Methodist Church, with burial in Macedonia Methodist Protestant Cemetery. Rev. Mike Sahler, Rev. Lin Chesney and Dr. Leon Everett officiated and Norma Ruth Lee delivered the eulogy. Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Forest handled the arrangements.

Regina was born April 24, 1958 to Ina Gibbs and Sidney Gibbs, Jr. At a very young age, Regina began to excel in academics. In 1976, she graduated with honors from Newton High School. She continued with outstanding achievements at East Central Community College. After marriage and two children, she graduated from Mississippi College with special distinction and began a stellar career as an educator with the Forest public schools. She soon earned the National Board Certification for teachers.

On December 18, 1978, she became the bride of Bill Rigby, who shared many of her talents and interests. Together, they reared a daughter, Ginny, and a son, Anse, and the talents multiplied through their children.

In addition to full-time teaching, Regina, assisted by her husband, Bill, directed a long list of musicals and dramas for the Forest Community Arts and East Central Community College players. Many of her former students have expressed great appreciation for what she taught them through the disciplines of the classroom and the stage and, more importantly, through her exemplary Christian life.

She was an active member of the Forest United Methodist Church, having taught Sunday school and being a member and soloist in the choir. She was considered a Bible scholar, and she never stopped studying God’s Word. She was a gifted artist, actress, musician, composer, director, writer and her family, friends and the community cherish the memory of her remarkable abilities.

As Regina courageously fought her battle with cancer, she thanked God for Bill, her devoted husband of 28 years; her daughter Ginny Ivy and husband Dustin; granddaughter Sydney Klaire Ivy of Raleigh; her son, Anse; her mother, Ina Gibbs; her brothers, Randy Gibbs of Newton and Jeff Gibbs of Clifton; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of loving Rigby in-laws.

Regina was preceded in death by her father, Sidney Gibbs, Jr. and an infant daughter, Lillie Caitlin.

Pallbearers were Tommy Davis, Ronny Jones, Sid Salter, Hugh Carr, Steve Ware, Joey Rigby, Jeremy Gibbs, Jordan Gibbs and Tyler Rigby. Honorary pallbearers were Brenda Miles, Carol Ann Jones, Trudy Blalock, Gina Burns, Denise Hollingsworth, Martha Cleveland, Brooke Bagley, Leah Rigby, Connie Stewart, Brandon Chambers, Ryan Coulter, Matt Reynolds, Justin Hurdle, Jason Hurdle, Jess Dilley, Ryan Reeves, Wade Brown and Austin Wilbanks.

I've really enjoyed finding out about all my former schoolmates on this site. I go through all the school years to see updates every so often.

I have worked at La-Z-Boy South for 21 years. I am the Benefits Manager in the Human Resources Dept. there. I'm married to Andy Rowzee, who works at Esco Corp. We make our home in Hickory, where we moved into a new home one mile north of I-20 in 2002.

I have a step-son, Steven (age 22), and a daughter, Makenzie, who is 12. I stay very busy with her and love every bit of it. There's so much more for kids to do than there was when we were young!

I'm very involved with the Newton Theatre Company which performs in the old Roxy Theatre that has been renovated. I've done everything from directing to acting to working on costumes and serving on the board, etc. I love it and especially love working with kids during productions.

I have renewed my teacher’s certificate and hope to teach fulltime. As a United Methodist Pastor, the moving around so often was hard anyway. My son is 13 and ½ my daughter is 11 and ½ almost. We now live in Osawatomie, KS. We are near my husband’s home farm and he went to high school here. He has a Master’s Degree in Multi Media Journalism but had several strokes. He is mobile, but has trouble concentrating and having enough energy to get through the day. He became disabled at age 39..."

and will be moving in June. Logan has almost completed his freshman year at Texas A&M and still deciding on a major at this point. Holly is a junior in high school and is thoroughly enjoying her friends and activities. Tim is an interventional cardiologist and stays busy and challenged daily. Susan is in her 14th year of teaching and loves her 2nd graders. There's always something new and fun to look forward to everyday. Besides teaching, I love going to the A&M football and baseball games and vacationing in Seagrove, Florida! Other news: My mom(Ruth Speed) died of a massive heart attack Nov. 2001, at which time, Dad (Fred Speed) came to live with us in Houston. He was with us for 4 years until he passed away in Dec. 2005 from leukemia. Tim's dad (R.J. Reynolds) passed away in July 2005 from pancreatic cancer. It's been a very busy few years in the "sandwich generation", you know, taking care of parents AND children,... but I wouldn't have traded it for anything. It was such a blessing as I look back on it. I've always appreciated my parents, but I never realized how much I would miss them after they're gone. Don't miss an opportunity to tell your folks what they mean to you!

Rusty, I really enjoyed visiting Tiger Roars. Some of my best memories were formed growing up in Newton and attending Newton High. I still keep in touch with a fair amount of former class mates. I would like to see more people register on your sight (including a picture a must) especially, some of those from the class of 1976. This photo of Robin and me was taken while visiting New Orleans some years ago. Not much has changed with our looks, except like most people, a few extra lbs., wrinkles, and gray hairs. I am employed at V.T. Miltope as a planner and Robin works for the State of AL, Public Health Department as an epidemiologist. My mom retired and resides in Foley,AL so we get down to the AL beaches quite often which we enjoy. Most of the time you can catch Robin and me at home. During the football season we are always watching and supporting Auburn football, WAR EAGLE! --Gwen is married to Robin Moore and lives in Montgomery, AL.

"...I finished your book Newton Ave and throughly enjoyed it. It was good to read about the town from which I graduated high school and where my parents, sister and brother still live. Since I did not move to Newton until my 10th grade year of high school, I did not know much about what you shared in your book. The history and spots that I never knew about were very interesting reading. Your spin on it made it much more so.

Probably by growing up in the country in the small stop in the road they called Hero, I would not have known much of it anyway. I think it must have been great to grow up in the city limits with a chance to visit friends on a whim and go to places like Miley's. I do remember the Roxy and going to the show there many times.

I was saddened to hear about Michael Smith. I do remember him well and with very fond memories. He was such fun to be around. I was married and at Mississippi State with my husband in the year of 1979 and never knew that Michael and you were there at the same time. What a shame.

To be honest I have lost touch with most the people with which I graduated high school. I do not know how much I really ever fit into Newton. It was the first time we lived in the place where my dad was actually a pastor in the town in which we lived. It was a knew experience for me to be confronted on a daily basis with being a preacher's kid. Believe me it had its baggage. I do have great memories and some people I hold dear to my heart even though I may not have seen them it too many years to mention..."

The old building remains. It's still there but for you, me and countless others its gone. It's been gone a long time now. Yet somewhere in the deep recesses of our brain it remains. Not the hollow halls or the brick exterior but the lingering memory of laughter and chatter - the sounds of teenage chaos. It was a part of us for so long... a vital part that shaped our dreams and molded our character. You know how it is - a song will come on the radio and before you know it you are there again for a split second - caught between the bells and the slamming metal lockers with an armload of books. That insane place won't die... it lives... deep in each of us, it still lives.
